Midnight’s Dream: Book One of The Verbecks of Idaho

“Where family loyalty meets forbidden love, and second chances bloom in the shadow of the mountains.”

Book one in the Verbecks of Idaho series

Logan Miller had been home for six months, and in that time, he’d learned three things: cancer didn’t care about pride, his father’s ranch was falling apart faster than a lie in a courtroom, and coming back to Idaho after twenty-two years meant eventually facing the ghosts he’d left behind. The fourth thing—the one that made his jaw clench every time he drove past the Verbeck property line—was that Cole Verbeck hadn’t come for him yet. The waiting was worse than any punch Cole could throw.

But today, apparently, his father had decided Logan’s real problem wasn’t the crumbling fence, the neglected flower beds that had once been his mother’s sanctuary, or even the specter of Cole Verbeck’s inevitable revenge. No, according to Harold Miller—dying man, stubborn rancher, and now self-appointed matchmaker—Logan’s biggest failure was his lack of a wife and the grandchildren his father would never live to see. The conversation Logan had been dreading wasn’t about forgiveness, the ranch, or even Joel’s death. It was about legacy, and time running out faster than either of them wanted to admit.

Note from the Author

This story was my very first novella, inspired by my father-in-law and the colorful life he led in the small town of Riggins, Idaho. Having grown up in the city, I was endlessly fascinated by his stories—tales filled with quirky characters, rugged landscapes, and the kind of close-knit community that defines small-town living. His anecdotes painted such a vivid picture that I could not help but imagine what it would be like to belong to a place where everyone knows your name and every corner has its own legend.

While this story isn’t a direct retelling of his life, nor is it strictly based on Riggins (I know better than to try to capture every nuance of such a beloved place!), it is very much a love letter to that world. The series is incredibly close to my heart because it allowed me to blend the warmth of his memories with my own dreams—to create a fictional Idaho that feels both authentic and magical. Whenever I revisit these pages, I see glimpses of my father-in-law: never much of a rancher, but always a daring bull rider with stories to spare.
